Hormuz crossings rise slightly from weekend, remain in single digits, data shows
Ship crossings through the Strait of Hormuz remained in single digits Monday, though slightly higher than over the weekend, amid stalled US-Iran peace talks, according to preliminary Kpler data released Tuesday.
Six commodity ships transited the strait Monday, with three exiting and three entering the Gulf, compared with a 10-day average of 11. Three crossed Saturday and two Sunday. No very large crude carriers or LNG tankers passed through.
Some vessels may have transited with their transponders off and were not included. The VLGC Xavia entered via the Iranian route under ballast, meaning empty. VLGCs typically carry LPG such as propane and butane.
A medium-range fuel tanker and intermediate-range tanker entered the Gulf, while a medium-sized LPG carrier, Panamax bulk carrier and Panamax fuel tanker exited.
Shipping slowed after weekend tanker attacks as US-Iran talks stalled. Kpler data showed five commodity vessels crossed Saturday and none Sunday, compared with 31 the previous weekend. Saturday crossings included an empty VLCC with its AIS off and an Indian-flagged VLGC using the Iranian route. A small tanker carrying Iranian fuel oil also exited the Gulf.
