Transportation Department Commits Another $200 Million to $8 Billion Penn Station Rebuild
The Transportation Department said Wednesday it will provide another $200 million to begin construction by the end of next year on an $8 billion plan to rebuild New York’s Penn Station, a key transit artery.
Amtrak and the Trump administration said the plan includes expanding track capacity, building a grand Eighth Avenue entrance to a new train hall, and replacing aging walkways with open modern concourses. Penn Station is the busiest transit hub in the U.S., serving 10 million Amtrak passengers annually and 100 million total riders when regional rail systems are included.
Last month, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the department would spend $4.7 billion on rail projects along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, including Penn Station and Union Station in Washington, D.C.
“We’re going to give $8 billion to rebuild Penn Station,” Duffy said Tuesday at a Senate hearing.
The announcement means New York will not move Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, concerts, shows, and other sporting events. The rebuild also includes new retail space and a redesigned exterior with a classical look.
In 2021, New York opened the $1.6 billion Moynihan Train Hall in the Farley Post Office building across Eighth Avenue from Penn Station.
The 255,000-square-foot hall connects passengers to 17 Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road tracks.
