Trump Administration Offers 81 Million Acres in Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale

The Trump administration opened bidding on more than 81 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas drilling, expanding federal energy development across offshore waters.

The auction, managed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, covers roughly 15,100 unleased blocks spanning from 3 to 231 miles offshore across the Western, Central, and Eastern planning areas.

This offshore offering marks the third of 30 required Gulf lease sales established under the administration’s tax and spending legislation passed in 2025.

It also represents the second major federal offshore lease auction conducted since conflict in the Middle East disrupted global crude flows and pushed energy prices to four-year highs.

Pre-sale disclosures indicated that 12 energy companies submitted 69 total bids covering about 330,000 acres, representing roughly 0.4% of the total acreage made available.
