Trump Attends Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington
President Donald Trump attended the Freedom 250 Grand Prix today to celebrate “greatness with American motor racing.”
Before the race, Trump and first lady Melania Trump completed a lap in the presidential limousine around a temporary street circuit near the U.S. Capitol, safely seated in the rear of the Beast.
The ceremonial lap launched a day of IndyCar racing on a 1.7-mile downtown track as part of the ongoing America250 festivities marking the nation’s semiquincentennial.
The race was organized with federal officials and IndyCar owner Roger Penske, bringing a major sporting event to the capital. City crews and race officials spent weeks preparing the course, welding shut more than 200 manhole covers along the 1.7-mile route.
The 250-mile race requires drivers to complete 147 laps around the narrow, concrete-walled street circuit.
Trump greeted the drivers before the race, and waved the green flag to officially start it.
