U.S. Jobless Claims Rose Again Last Week
U.S. jobless claims rose more than expected last week, reaching 209,000 in the week through Aug. 8, up 9,000 from the upwardly revised 200,000 a week earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal expected 204,000.
Continuing claims totaled 1.78 million in the week through Aug. 1, down 22,000 from the downwardly revised 1.8 million a week earlier. Continuing claims lag initial claims by one week.

Unemployment levels have risen for three straight weeks after declining earlier this summer. Companies have slowed hiring, and total payrolls shrank last month as labor demand cools.
