Ben Gurion Airport Reopens After Surprise Strike Diverts Flights and Strands Passengers
Operations are gradually returning to normal at Ben Gurion Airport today. This comes after a sudden work stoppage threw Israel’s main travel hub into total turmoil. The disruption hit during one of the busiest travel days of the entire year. The unexpected strike halted all passenger check-ins and stranded thousands of travelers.
Multiple incoming international flights were forced to divert or turn back mid-air. A Wizz Air flight traveling from Luton was diverted directly to Larnaca. Major international carriers also turned their aircraft around mid-route to head home. These affected airlines included Air France, Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, and Swiss International Air Lines.
The disruption stemmed from a wildcat strike by airport staff protesting severe personnel shortages. Workers cited ongoing employee burnout as a primary reason for the sudden action. The work stoppage drew swift and sharp pushback from top government leadership. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the airport would remain open and operate as usual. He added that anyone standing in the way would be sent packing. Transportation Minister Miri Regev also threatened legal action against union organizers.
Meanwhile, the Israel Airports Authority pushed back firmly against the union’s claims. They called the sudden shutdown an extreme and intolerable move that directly harms the public. Management emphasized that recruiting efforts have been ongoing, with dozens of new staff already hired.
Following an agreement reached between management and worker representatives, operations began to recover. The Israel Airports Authority confirmed that arrivals and departure check-ins began resuming at 3:00 PM local time.
Although the airport is back open, travelers should still expect significant knock-on delays. Passengers are strongly urged to confirm their flight status directly with their airline before arriving at the terminal.
