I’ve been a patient of Dr. Shanik since I was born, back when my parents would travel to Toms River to see him. Today, my own children are patients of Dr. Shanik as well. He is truly the best in the world—a legend in pediatric medicine—and this is in no way a criticism of him personally.
That said, the situation in the office has become very difficult. It often starts with waiting on hold for 45 minutes at 8:00 in the morning, only to be told that there are no appointments left for the day. If you do manage to get an appointment, you can expect to wait an hour in the waiting room and another 45 minutes in the exam room before being seen.
On top of that, after all that waiting, the vast majority of the time you’re actually seen by a PA or NP rather than Dr. Shanik himself. I understand the concern that if a child is seen elsewhere, Dr. Shanik may not have access to the full medical information and could be missing important details. However, I think there is a simple solution: make patients’ charts available online so parents can easily share them with any provider they choose. That would allow an urgent care doctor to review the child’s history when treating them, and it would also allow Dr. Shanik to easily see what took place at the urgent care afterward and keep the medical record complete and up to date.
Again, Dr. Shanik is an incredible physician, and this comes from someone whose family has trusted him for generations. But the current system is simply becoming untenable for many families.
