French UN soldier Killed in Southern Lebanon, Three Others Wounded
A French soldier serving with United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed today in southern Lebanon, and three other soldiers were wounded, two of them seriously, after gunfire targeted a unit operating in the Ghandouriyeh area.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the fallen soldier was a sergeant from the Montauban region, adding that all indications point to responsibility by Hezbollah for the attack.
According to a UNIFIL statement, the unit had arrived in the area to clear unexploded ordnance and open an access route to isolated positions when it came under small-arms fire from what were described as “non-state actors.” The organization stressed that the incident was a deliberate attack on a force operating under its mandate, emphasizing that targeting peacekeepers constitutes a violation of international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to a war crime.
President Macron expressed condolences to the family of the fallen soldier, condemned the “unacceptable attack,” and called on Lebanese authorities to act against those responsible. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also condemned the incident and ordered an investigation.
