Judge blocks US Postal Service from restricting mail-in voting
A federal judge on Tuesday blocked the U.S. Postal Service from implementing part of President Trump’s executive order seeking to tighten mail-in voting rules ahead of November’s elections, which will determine control of Congress.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston expanded on an earlier June order that barred the administration from implementing the measure in 23 mostly Democratic-led states.
Several voting rights groups had urged her to go further and block USPS nationwide from implementing a proposed rule requiring states to provide voter lists and adopt new balloting procedures before the agency would deliver ballots.
If states did not comply, USPS would have refused to deliver the ballots. The plaintiffs argued the agency would have no legal basis to do so.
