Klobuchar Wins Democratic Nomination for Minnesota Governor
U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar sailed to victory in Minnesota’s Democratic primary for governor Tuesday, positioning the four-term senator and 2020 presidential candidate as a formidable contender to help Democrats hold the open seat in November.
Klobuchar entered the race in late January after Gov. Tim Walz reversed course and abandoned plans to seek a third term amid scrutiny over his administration’s response to fraud targeting state social services programs.
Her late entry and track record of outperforming other Democrats statewide helped her avoid a serious primary challenge from the left.
If she wins in November, Klobuchar will become Minnesota’s first female governor. Summer polls showed her with a comfortable lead over potential rivals, though her support was below the margins of victory in her recent U.S. Senate races.
