New Mossad Chief Announces Departure of Deputy
Mossad Director Roman Gofman informed the agency’s deputy chief, identified only as “A.,” of his decision to end the deputy’s tenure and appoint a new second-in-command from within the organization.
In a statement, the Mossad praised A.’s 22 years of operational service and his significant contribution to Israel’s security. During his career, he served in three operational divisions, commanded two of them, and led a series of groundbreaking operations. He was awarded five Israel Security Prizes for his achievements.
The statement added that A. wished Gofman success in his new role and said he would continue to make his experience and expertise available to the Mossad and the State of Israel whenever needed.
The move comes as part of Gofman’s effort to shape the senior leadership team that will help guide the agency through its objectives and challenges in the coming years.
According to military correspondent Doron Kadosh, the decision is considered highly unusual, coming just days after Gofman assumed office and while he is still becoming familiar with the organization.
Kadosh noted that when David Zini took over the Shin Bet, he asked the then-deputy chief, identified as “Shin,” to remain in the role for several months to assist with the transition before eventually stepping down.
