One Dead, One Injured in Shooting at Delaware Hospital; Suspect at Large

One person was killed and another was injured Tuesday in a shooting at a Delaware hospital, and the suspect remains at large, police said.

The attack was reported around 3:30 p.m. at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital, Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said at a news conference. Officers arriving at the scene found both victims but no shooter.

The chief did not release details on the victims, including their identities or the survivor’s condition, “out of respect for the families.” No suspect description or motive was available. Campos said, “We are actively working to identify and locate him,” adding officers will work “tirelessly” to bring the person to justice.

John Carney said hospital workers were “barricaded in rooms across the hospital as law enforcement cleared each of the floors.” He added, “This has been a terrible day for our city.”

Matt Meyer said his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, was on duty at the downtown hospital when the shooting happened, and called hospital employees “heroes involved in life-saving efforts.”

Lisa Blunt Rochester said she had been briefed on the situation. “As we wait for further information, I’m praying for our community and grateful for the swift and ongoing law enforcement response,” she said.

Wilmington, the state’s largest city with more than 73,000 residents, is sometimes called the “corporate capital of America” because many major corporations register their legal addresses there.
