6 killed after gunman opens fire in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials say

A gunman who killed at least six people in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, before taking hostages and barricading himself inside a supermarket on Saturday was shot and killed by police, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukraine’s special tactical police units stormed the store after negotiators failed to reach the gunman, Interior Ministry head Ihor Klymenko said on social media. He said the attacker was killed while resisting arrest.

Speaking at the scene, Klymenko said the gunman first killed four bystanders on the street, then entered the supermarket and killed a fifth person. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a sixth victim, a young woman, later died of her injuries in hospital.

Klymenko said the shooter was born in 1968 but gave no further identity details. Police negotiators spoke with him for about 40 minutes before the raid. He was carrying a legally registered carbine, a short-barrel assault rifle.
