Jason Williams, a machine shop owner from Clover, South Carolina, landed the one-of-a-kind Cooper Flagg NBA debut patch card and now has multimillion-dollar offers on the table.
The father of five paid $515 for the Dallas Mavericks in a Topps Chrome Update Basketball break conducted last Monday by Rhode Island-based Rhody Breakers. In a break, collectors buy the rights to a team or player and receive eligible cards pulled from a set number of packs or boxes, typically during a livestream.
Flagg’s one-of-one card features a patch from the jersey he wore in his NBA debut. As the breaker neared the reveal, Williams moved the livestream from his phone to a bigger screen, only to see the card collectors had been chasing appear on screen. It was his.
Williams, who turned 50 in July, has collected sports cards on and off since he was 12. He enjoyed opening packs himself and discovered online breaks about six years ago.
The Dallas Mavericks have offered lower-level season tickets for 32 years plus other perks in exchange for the card. Several others have also made multimillion-dollar offers.
For now, Williams says he’s in no rush to make a deal “Right now, I’m not even looking at the money,” he said.
