UK government issues Severe Alert over ‘very high’ wildfire risk nationwide

The UK government has issued a Severe Alert warning of a very high national wildfire risk, urging residents, landowners and visitors to avoid activities that could start fires.

The alert warns that even a small flame could quickly become a major wildfire, putting lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.

The public has been urged to avoid disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks.

The warning comes as the UK faces exceptionally dry, hot conditions, with fire and rescue services dealing with a record number of wildfires across England and Wales in 2026. Reuters reported Friday that this year’s total has already surpassed the 1,017 incidents recorded in 2025.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned that Britain remained at significant risk, with dozens of fires still active nationwide. Emergency services are facing mounting pressure amid the country’s fifth heatwave of the summer.
