Virginia to Ban Future Sales of Certain Semi-Automatic Firearms, High-Capacity Magazines Starting July 1
Starting July 1, Virginia will ban the future sale, manufacture and transfer of certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines holding more than 15 rounds under a new law supporters say is intended to reduce access to weapons commonly used in mass shootings.
Current owners may keep firearms they legally possess, and in some cases transfer them to immediate family members.
The law immediately drew legal challenges. Within hours of it being signed, the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups filed lawsuits in state and federal court, arguing it violates Second Amendment protections.
The measure is scheduled to take effect July 1, though ongoing court battles could determine whether parts of it are enforced.
