Hegseth Ousts Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and enter immediate retirement.
The decision comes as Hegseth seeks leadership that aligns more closely with the administration’s vision for the military.
Gen. George, a West Point graduate and veteran of the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, was originally nominated by the Biden administration and confirmed in 2023.
The move follows a series of high-level dismissals by Hegseth, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Chief of Naval Operations.
While the ouster occurs shortly after Hegseth overruled the Army’s decision to discipline an aircrew for a flyover of Kid Rock’s home, sources indicate the removal of Gen. George is related to broader leadership changes rather than that specific incident.
Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the current Vice Chief of Staff, is considered a likely successor.
