Tropical Storm Lala Weakens After Lashing Hawaii, Leaving Over 60,000 Without Power
Lala was downgraded to a tropical storm after skirting Hawaii’s Big Island as a Category 1 hurricane, though it continues to batter the island chain with howling winds and dangerous rainfall.
The Big Island bore the initial brunt of the storm, leaving more than 60,000 households without power and forcing three hospitals to rely on emergency backup generators. At least one fatality was confirmed in a vehicle crash in the South Point area, while first responders launched search-and-rescue operations after flash flooding swept several occupied homes off their foundations in Na’alehu and Wai’ohinu.
Forecasters warn that high windward slopes could still see total rainfall reaching up to 35 inches, raising extreme risks of severe flash flooding, mudslides, and dangerous runoff. Tropical storm warnings remain in place across the rest of the main islands, including Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, as the storm tracks westward.
